The D3000 shares the same 10 million pixel CCD sensor as the D60, and almost exactly the same body and design, but this camera is more than a cosmetic revamp of the older model. Crucially, the D60's adequate but uninspiring 3-point AF system is gone, replaced by the same 11-point system as found in the D90.

Like a lot of recent Nikon DSLRs the D3000 has a tendency to deliver rather bright mid tones, which can threaten highlight detail, especially in JPEGs, but on the plus side, images are nice and bright and look great when printed straight from the camera.

Sony Alpha 230. $429. No. 2.7" / 230k pixels. In-body. 10.2 MP CCD (1.5x crop) The Nikon D3000 shares virtually the same body shell, and essentially the same ergonomics, as the D40, which was released in 2006. The D40 was Nikon's best selling DSLR until the D60 was released in 2008, and Nikon will be hoping that the D3000 is equally popular.

Nikon D3000. Canon EOS 1000D. 4.1 MB JPEG (3872 x 2592) 3.1 MB JPEG (3888 x 2592 ) It is clear from the crops here that Canon EOS 1000D's default in-camera sharpening is stronger than the Nikon's, but although images appear slightly softer at default settings, turning the D3000's sharpening up by a notch or two (or applying a little post-capture sharpening) …

The D3000 may not have all the latest bells and whistles feature-wise, but what it does it does extremely well. If you can live without live view and movie modes it's the perfect beginner's camera. 72% Highly Recommended Good for First timers wanting an easy to use SLR Not so good for More demanding users, working in low light Read our full review

The D3000 is one of the smallest DSLRs currently on the market, but fortunately its diminutive proportions belie a high standard of construction. Unlike some low-end cameras, there is no creak in any of the body seams of the D3000, and with the bundled 18-55mm optic mounted, the whole package feels solid and well-balanced.

Our in-depth review of the Nikon D3000, which replaces the popular D60 as Nikon's latest entry-level DSLR. A new guide mode and revamped AF system make the D3000 a compelling upgrade for D60 and D40X users, but the lack of a Live View function will not go unnoticed in the feature-hungry entry-level sector.

The difference between 10 and 12 million pixels is negligible in normal use, and with a high quality lens attached, detail resolution from the D3000's CCD sensor is very high. Here, I shot the same scene three times using a high quality lens (the AF-S Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8 G ED) at f/8, to really get a feel for what the sensor can do.

The Nikon D3000's maximum shutter speed is 30 seconds and a Bulb mode is available for even longer exposures, which is excellent news if you're seriously interested in night photography. The shot below was taken using a shutter speed of 20 seconds at ISO 400. I've included a 100% crop of the image to show what the quality is like. Sample Images
