The Pratt & Whitney JT9D engine opened a new era in commercial aviation: the high-bypass ratio engine to power wide-body aircraft. Since entering service on the Boeing 747 in 1970, the JT9D has proven itself to be the powerhouse for early 747, 767, A300, A310 and DC-10 aircraft models with over 3,000 cumulative engines

This photo, showing Capt. Ed Foster standing in the inlet, gives an indication of the size of the engine. The JT9D-70A was very reliable in service. In the end, however, the common nacelle and the JT9D‑70A failed in the marketplace. The airlines that operated 747s wanted the bigger engines in the sort of nacelle they already had.

The JT9D has flown more than 169 million total hours to date. Each day, more than 600 aircraft takeoffs are accomplished using JT9D power. The JT9D-7R4 model, introduced in 1982 and built on the earlier successes of the engine, features enhanced performance. For twinjets, JT9D engines are approved for 180-minute

What Exactly Was The Problem With Early JT9D-3's?

    https://www.airliners.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=762715
The JT9D was very much a pioneering endeavour and in a way it was normal that it had so many problems. Happy thing is (IIRC), none of these problems ever gave rise to accidents. There were several very close calls, however. In Aug 1970, an Air France 747 taking off from Montreal suffered an uncontained engine failure.
