Flashing the Paper - Film Exposure - Tanguay Photo Mag

    https://www.tanguayphotomag.biz/film-exposure/flashing-the-paper.html
Flashing the paper allows dense highlights on the negative to produce tonality in the final print without adversely affecting the shadows. An extremely low exposure to nonimage light can reduce the contrast of a print. It can do so in a way more effective than simply reducing the grade of the paper. In a sense, it's a free lunch.

Flashing and Fogging - Les McLean Photography

Flashing is a method of controlling contrast by pre-sensitising the paper with an exposure to white light that overcomes the paper’s inertia. The initial exposure to white light will produce no tone it simply eliminates the inertia to light. Therefore, when exposing the paper with a negative in the enlarger, known as image forming light, a certain amount of the exposure is not producing …

Yes, exposing the paper to non-image forming light (ie flashing) reduces contrast. What you want to do in your case is give the paper the maximum exposure which does not produce any visible tone. This will require a few tests. Flashing reduces contrast most in the highlights and progressively less as paper density increases. Michael

Something I've been wanting to try is flashing the paper to contract contrast. My idea is to take a small square of transluscent plastic (the type used in lighting fixtures) in the filter drawer of the Beseler. But I have no idea how long to flash for. Anyone have any thumbrules or …

Place a small sheet (e.g. 4x5) of your paper on the easel. Cover one edge of this - say 1/2" - with a sheet of opaque material. Set your f/stop at f/22 and do a test strip by exposing the sheet in increments of 1 or 2 seconds for up to 10 seconds. Process the paper and let dry (or use Ansel Adams' trick of drying in a microwave). The edge you had

Make an actual scrap print, cut out the areas to be flashed, and place the print on or above the paper during the flash exposure (essentially paper plane masking). Note it is best to use RC paper for this since in addition to it being obviously easier to work with and faster to process/wash/dry, it has to be dimensionally stable paper so that "registration" at the paper …

Flashing is one of them. Flashing can be applied either before or after the base exposure although the results may be slightly different. In classic flashing, you first remove the negative from the carrier, and then close the lens aperture to reduce the …

Flashing (cinematography) - Wikipedia

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flashing_(cinematography)
In cinematography and photography, flashing is the exposure of the film or digital sensors to uniform light prior to exposing it to the scene. It is used as a method of contrast control to bring out detail in darker areas. This adds a bias to the overall light input recorded by the sensor. When used for artistic effects, it can be used to add a colour cast to shadows without significantly …
